What is the Gaelic Games & RNLI Basic First Aid Course? This bespoke course is designed to provide clubs and those involved in Gaelic games (parents, match officials, players, coaches and other volunteers) with the knowledge and skills, within safe boundaries, to assess a situation and perform immediate and potentially lifesaving first-aid skills. The CPR element of the course is affiliated with the Irish Heart Foundation, while other areas covered include; Assessment, Mechanism of Injury/Illness, Lifesaving Emergencies, Bleeds, Breaks, Bruises, Head Injuries.
Who is the Gaelic Games & RNLI Basic First Aid Course for? The course is designed to be completed by any adult member involved in Gaelic games, particularly those not from a medical background. An overall goal is to gradually increase the number of qualified first-aiders at all training sessions and matches.
Why is this course being made available? This course is being introduced to equip our members with key potentially lifesaving and basic first aid knowledge which can then be applied in a Gaelic Games-context in the best interests of player welfare and the health and wellbeing of everyone involved in our games.

What is involved in hosting a course? The instructor to student ratio is 1:6, so a minimum of 6 students are needed for a course to go ahead. Typically, it is encouraged to have 12 students and 2 instructors for a course. The course lasts a full day, usually on a Saturday or Sunday, from 9am-5pm. The course is typically held in a clubhouse or community centre, with adequate space and facilities to host seated lectures and practical demonstrations. Catering should be provided for attendees, while instructors will provide necessary equipment.
