GAA Injury Benefit Fund Explained
It is a Fund designed to assist members covered within it in the event of a playing \ training injury as per the limits of cover outlined. It is the responsibility of those that voluntarily taking part in our games to ensure that they have adequate covers in place.
GAA affiliated units on the Island of Ireland only.
The GAA Injury Benefit Fund applies to:
Registered Players as per the Official Code who incur an accidental bodily injury* while playing Hurling, Gaelic Football, Handball or Rounders' only either.
*in the course of an official cometitive Fixture or an Official Sanctioned challenge match or in the course of an official supervised collective team training session.
- Match officials' i.e. referees, linesmen or umpires registered as non-playing mambers / Match Officials on Foireann who are injured while officiating at an official competitive fixture of Hurling, Gaelic Football or Rounders as specified above.
- Voluntary coaches, team managers, selectors and members of official team parties registered as non-playing members / Coaches on Foirean who are injured during games or training as specified above.
Adult registered playing member – €50 per member - no maximum per Club or Unit
Youth registered playing member - €5 per member – no maximum per Club or Unit
In addition to the above, a claims band programme applies to all registered clubs with the sole aim of it to bring equitable distribution to the Fund in that the claims experience of each registered club is accounted for against the fees paid by each unit in the calculation of the annual subscriptions due for the period under review. April 1 – March 31 – this is the same cover period as the GAA membership year.
Medical and Dental Expenses – €5,500 maximum, first €100 not covered
Loss of wages – week 1 – no cover, weeks 2 – 26 covers up to €400 per week

Key exclusions are the following:
- All applicable members must be registered on Foireann at the injury date or no cover is available under the Fund.
- Claims not reported on Foireann by the injured player or the parent \ guardian where the player is a youth within 60 days of the injury date, injury date is day 1
- Claims will be declined if the club has not paid their fees as required.

The claim record goes to Allianz who are the appointed claims administrators for the Fund. The player or the parent \ guardian if the injured player is a youth member will receive an email from Allianz confirming the claim reference number, the documents required to assess a claim and a link to upload the documents too.

Uploading documents to an Injury Notification – Foireann Help Centre
The documentation goes into a queue for assessment. The documentation uploaded will normally be reviewed within 14 working days from the date that the information was uploaded. Once the information is reviewed, a member of the claims team will email the player or parent \ guardian where the player is a youth with an assessment of the claim. The assessment will confirm if the claim can be paid or if documentation is still outstanding to resolve the claim.
The player or parent \ guardian where the player is a youth will be asked to nominate the payee for the claim as in the player \ parent \ guardian or the club and provide the bank details required. Payments will be issued by electronic transfer.

Claims handling for Injury Claims with injury dates from June 1, 2023 – May 31, 2025
The Leeson Group have been appointed to manage the legacy claims with an injury date from June 1, 2023 – May 31, 2025. The GAA unit is still responsible for managing these claims and you will be able to upload the relevant claims documents required to resolve these claims. Claims Administration for open claims with an injury date prior to May 31, 2023
GAA are handling any open claims with an Injury date prior to May 31, 2023. We are robustly audited on the Fund a number of times a year and questions always arise with regards to holding funds open for legacy claims. Please email ciara.clarke@gaa.ie for assistance on these cases.
